Fishing in South Point

Went fishing in South Point. Caught pathetically tiny fish. I need to learn more tricks.

Mckenzie State Park

Caution: turn down the volume before you play the video. It's a little loud.

It's a park standing on a 20 feet cliff by the ocean. The waves were so high the day we were there.

On Hamakua Coast

We went to a friend's birthday party on Hamakua Coast located 1/2 north of Hilo. The house is on 1.2 acres of land with nice view of the ocean, yet far enough to avoid all the salt in the winds.

Pana`ewa Zoo

It's a free zoo with amazing animals in spectacular landscaping.

This parrot's name is Einstein. He gets a Mohawk when excited.

Aflac!!!
Hawaiian Hawk, Io, lives only on Big Island.

Meet Namaste, a 10 year old white Bengal tiger, born in Las Vegas and hand-fed by a magician Dirk Arthur. Such a graceful animal!

Blue and Yellow Macaw, who looked more civilized than the last time.

Pigmy goat. Super cute. He loves carrots.

Peacocks are not caged at the zoo.

Titan Triggerfish

Typical fishing day. You never know if you can get lucky.
And I did!

After searching online, I found out it was Titan Triggerfish. It grows up to 30 inches long. I should probably have released this small one (8 inches) but I didn't know! It ended up on our dinner plate, and it was yummy!

Another spot, another fish

My guru and I went to try out a new spot. I caught a couple of new faces, all too small to take back home. All I need is one mature-sized fish and I'm done for the day!

Kona trip with parents

My parents came to visit me for 11 days. It was quite exhausting to me 'cause my dad arrived in bad shape, almost dead on arrival. Prior to the departure I kept asking my mom if he was doing good. The answer was always good so I presumed everything was okay.

Upon greeting them at the airport, I found something was wrong with my dad. He seemed out of it, not responding to my talking to him. The flight drained him utterly. Suddenly his health became No.1 priority.

It took one full day for him to feel better. Still, he could only walk at a much slower pace, claiming his feet hurt. Getting in and out of the car was an issue for him as well. A friend of mine suggested we try out what she's got for her handicapped husband: a wheelchair, walker and a quad cane. My dad's pick was the cane.

Anyway, we took the north route to go around the island, with one night stay in Kona, going down south to get back home the second day, always facing the ocean on our right.

From our hotel on the Kona bay.

One of the coffee farms we visited. This one is run by a Japanese coffee chain and very well maintained with lots of fruit trees and flowers on the premises. There is an inter-island cruise ship in the back. Looks bigger than a medium sized hotel.

I'd love a mango tree in my yard, but seeing how tall they are when fully matured I just have to give up.

Jade vine growing on a trelis.

Half-sized avocados. Taken somewhere along Hwy 11 on the way to Captain Cook.

The Painted Church near Captain Cook.

Honu (sea turtle) resting on Black Sand Beach in Punaluu.

Mangoes. No fruits left behind where I'm concerned. I'm actually allergic to mangoes, but these didn't do me a thing. I'm thinking maybe it's the pesticide they spray that I respond to?

No fluke anymore?

This is my last catch (& release), and I haven't had any luck with fishing in almost a week. I don't go every single day, though. I'm starting to wonder if the fish are getting smarter...

Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa

The last place you'd be on a tropical island: atop a 13,000-feet (4,000m) mountain. There are actually two of them. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, meaning "White Mountain" and "Long Mountain", respectively.

Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano, with a celestial observatory on the summit.

A plant called "Silversword"

A spiritual hitchhiker we picked up on the way up.

The altitude got the better of me, my brain not getting enough air. You'll feel "high" naturally.

Cool-looking dome. There are 13 telescopes on the summit, each representing a country or a research institution. Japan has one called "Subaru" set up there.

We came back down Mauna Kea and went up Mauna Loa sitting next to Mauna Kea. This one is active. The road to the summit is very rough.

Claw marks of lava fingers all around. So surreal. Last time it erupted was 1984.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO).

A Day at South Point

Driving on unpaved road for 10 minutes watching wind mills along the way.

There are ranches alongside the road.

Finally, the ocean!

This is the southernmost tip in the States. Hence the name "South Point". It's not touristy at all. Windy, dusty, dry and barren. No information center or guides available. Still people just go there to see what it's like. It's more known as a good fishing spot. That's why I spent two hours driving there. I didn't catch anything, though.

Catch of the day

I finally found a fishing guru who's nice enough to show me the ropes. This was my second time, and I was by myself at a spot 3-minutes from my house. I didn't feel much of a hit on the line, so it was a pleasant surprise to see a fish on the hook. 11-inch long (27cm) prize with a Hawaiian name of Nenue.

My cat probably never saw a fish. Well, he's originally from Ohio...

After half an hour of wielding a cooking knife.....

This is another fish I caught on the same day. It was too Nemo-looking, so I released it back into the sea.

Flying Kites

We flew kites one afternoon in a nearby park by the ocean. The wind was just perfect. our kites went right up in clear blue sky. On another day at the same park we sighted some whales. I'll try and take good pictures of them next time.

Happy New Year!

We went to Kona to spend the new year's eve into 2009, thanks to a friend couple in the neighborhood who invited us over. The east side of the island where we live gets a lot of rain this time of the year, so this trip was a nice getaway. We'd like to go there again for a change. It's only two and a half hours by car.
